My name is Derrick, and I’m a Dallas-based artist. I come from a Jamaican family of five and have been living in Texas since 2007. My surroundings shaped my outlook on life and the way I choose to live. Coming from an ethnic family background in a small town pushed me to seek the freedom from restrictions that are placed on me and my supposed gender and ethnicity. I like to pull a lot of inspiration from things I’ve seen growing up, and it has influenced me to make my own art. I started taking my creativity seriously around 2018 as an outlet from stressful and depressive times. Being an artist to me is to have the ability to bring fantasies and my thoughts into the physical world. In times when I was unsure of my feelings, making art allowed me to express what I couldn’t put into words. I grew up very introspective and self-aware. I would like to make more art that centers around ideology, fantasy, and worldbuilding. As a black artist, I believe I can draw more than just the black experience, and I’ve always wanted to showcase that in my art. I am more than pleased to continue this journey and incorporate new ways I can express my feelings and attract others that can resonate with me and my art.
